God Creates Family

Memory Verse: Hebrews 2:6b-7 “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet”

“Before Genesis 1:1 there was nothing. God started from scratch and created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them in six days. There are those who teach that each day of creation was one thousand years. But most of the things God created in day three (separated water from the land areas and created plants) could not survive to day five without the necessary counterparts for survival, let alone three to 5,000 years.” (What is God Doing? Bk 1 Lesson 3 Creation Series Intermediates)

God created by the power of His Word – “Let there be….”

In the first six days God made a place for what He was about to create, providing air, water, land, plants for food and a huge diversity of creatures to populate this world. God had thought of everything. The earth was the exact distance from the sun to sustain life. It was tilted at just the right angle to provide seasons. The temperature was neither too hot nor too cold to support life on the entire planet. The mixture of carbon-dioxide and oxygen was just right for His creatures to breathe. Everything had been set up just right. Nothing had been left out. Everything had been thought through and followed up consistently and completely. All was ready for what came next.

Genesis 1:26-28
“26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

Genesis 2:7
“7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person."

It wasn’t until He was ready to create man that God got personally involved. He lovingly reached down and took a handful of dirt and fashioned a man from it. Then He did something extraordinary. He breathed His own breath of life into it and it became a living person. Why do you think God breathed into man the “breath of life” but didn’t do this to any other animal or creature? Does this make you see mankind as special to God in a way that animals are not? Why or why not?

God fashioned man with His own hands. He took a hands-on approach with man that He didn’t with anything else He had created up to this point. All other creation was spoken into existence. God was personally interested in this creation that was to be created in His image and likeness. How does that make you see the people around you in a different way than before?

God then took this living person and placed him lovingly in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. God brought animals to the man so he could name them. After all this, man still was the only one of his kind. The fishes, birds and animals all could reproduce themselves, and these creatures could provide companionship, but man had no counterpart as did the animals. He could not reproduce himself. He was alone. Why do you think God created Adam and then brought animals to him? Why would this make Adam feel alone even though He had a relationship with God? What did God want Adam to realize?

Genesis 2:21-22
“21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and He brought her to the man”.

God created the first woman from one of Adam’s ribs. Why a rib – why not a bone from his foot? What does that tell you about how the relationship between man and woman should be? What is the position of a rib? (At the side, close to the heart) What does that tell you about how men and women should treat each other?

Genesis 2:23-24
23 “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one."

Adam was very pleased when he saw the woman for the first time. Why was woman “Eve” created?

Adam could talk to the animals but they couldn’t talk back to him – the woman was someone physically similar to him with whom he could communicate. This was someone with whom he could share his life. This was someone who would make it possible that he too might reproduce himself.

This was the first marriage relationship. This was also the first family relationship. Why didn’t God just create another man for Adam? Why did He create a woman? What does this tell you about God’s intention for marriage and the family? Why are these particular relationships so precious to God?

God’s intention was that one man and one woman should join their lives together and become one as a family and when children were born, they would be born into that family unit where they would be protected, nurtured, cherished and taught God’s ways. How does that pattern differ from what we see in society today? What is today’s society’s pattern for marriage and family? How does it differ from what God had in mind from the beginning?

Today, because a great portion of society has abandoned God’s pattern for marriage and family, civilization is falling apart. Men and women live together without marriage and persons of the same sex are clamoring for the right to get married. Divorce is rampant, even among Christians. There is an abundance of broken marriages, fatherless children, children being raised without fathers, or in some cases, without mothers, child abuse is increasing, respect for fathers has been diminished, and sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent. More and more children are being raised in one-parent families or by grandparents. Everything is turned upside-down with many people selfishly living their lives as if their life is the only one that matters.

2 Tim 3:1-4
“1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.”

That pretty well sums up where society is heading, if it is not already there, in many places.

What does the breakdown of family tell you about which pattern for marriage and the family is the correct choice – God’s or man’s? Why?

Proverbs 14:12 & 16:25
“There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.”

God tells you that only He knows what is right for you. When you decide right and wrong based on your emotions and how you feel, you will make wrong choices. God gave us this pattern because this pattern works and leads to a stable marriage, strong family, and ultimately a stable civilization.

When a man and woman love each other and then marry and have children, those children are more likely to be raised in a loving and caring environment and become responsible, loving and caring adults. They grow up marry someone they love and are more likely to raise children they love in a loving and caring home because that is the pattern that their parents followed – that is what they know. They see how their father and mother treat each other with love and respect, serving each other joyfully. They experience being loved and accepted and cherished by their parents. Their parents teach them God’s ways and why His ways are always the right choice. The pattern for family that God set up from the beginning between one man and one woman works.

God thought everything out carefully before He created mankind. All the steps taken to prepare a place for mankind were followed in the order they had to in order for life to flourish. Then, when everything was ready, God created mankind. He put the first man and the first woman together as a family where they could raise their children in a loving relationship. He set the pattern for family right from the very beginning.

God loves you. He did all this for you. He created all this for you. You are very special to Him.
